Y Festri
(pronounced "er vestry") is the vestry of the former Tabernacl chapel.
The chapel was built very simply of Welsh stone in 1836. In 1910 it was
modernised and an imposing neo-gothic front was added. The manse, next-door,
was rennovated and "Victorianised" at the same time. The chapel was the
largest in Blaenau, holding 999 members of the congregation and the minister.
In the early 1980's the chapel was sold and much of it demolished as it was in such a poor state of repair. Many of the chapel furnishings were purchased by the Grapes pub in Maentwrog. The front base of the chapel wall can still be seen, next to the left of the wooden gate and some of the old railings have been used to fence the garden. The vestry was left standing and converted into two properties: Y Festri and Llys Noddfa next door. The vestry was much more than just a changing room for the minister; it comprised community rooms (one with a stage) and a Sunday school room. The original ceilings can still be seen upstairs, though originally they were viewed from ground-floor level. (The first floor was a 1980's addition.) The long, school-like, sash windows were split in the conversion, but their outlines can still be seen on the back wall. Y Festri is not a holiday house; it is our home. Please treat it with love and care so it is there for us and our three young children when we come home.
